A Pirate Looks At 40: A Jimmy Buffett Inspired Birthday Party

It’s really hard to believe we’re here already…40 years of age. Even though I still have a few more months before I hit the big 4-0, it’s still hard to believe that it’s just around the corner.

A Pirate Looks At 40: A Jimmy Buffett Inspired Birthday Party
My husband isn’t a huge fan of parties but I knew that we needed to make this one a little special.
A Pirate Looks At 40: A Jimmy Buffett Inspired Birthday Party
When I met my guy in high school, he always wore Hawaiian shirts…and they we’re really cool back then either. 😉 But he wore them because he LOVED Jimmy Buffett.

JB has an awesome song called “A Pirate Looks At 40” and I knew it would be the perfect theme.
A Pirate Looks At 40: A Jimmy Buffett Inspired Birthday Party
I jumped on Amazon and ordered some party supplies, pressed off his old Hawaiian shirts, and brought out all my older Happy Everything! plates and serve ware, along with a few new pieces and it all turned out beautifully.

His cake was the cutest cake I’ve ever seen. We ordered an almond flavored cake (his favorite) from our favorite local cake maker and she did a fantastic job making it Hawaiian style. Isn’t it the cutest?!

What’s in my bag – Traveling Baseball Mom Edition 768 1024 Jenn Pennell
Shaw Avenue | What's In My Bag, Traveling Baseball Mom Edition
Hello Love!
Baseball season is upon us and I wanted to share with you my travel bag that I take to all of my son’s games, both home and away. Instead of running back and forth to the car for things, I carry everything I need in my HUGE Austin | Fowler Brielle backpack.
Since it’s only March, it can still be pretty cool sitting at games. We carry a small fleece blanket that we can either wrap up in or sit on if the bleachers are rough. Next up, a first aid kit. While I pray that my son will never need it while playing, I honestly carry it for my other two kids. You never know when a scraped knee will happen. 😂
While we always try to support the teams by purchasing from their concession stand, we do still carry our own snacks and water too, especially if the schools are far away. Since I’m conscience about reducing waste, we have these AWESOME reusable containers from Zip Top. They “zip” closed like your normal plastic baggies but can be reused time and time again. We LOVE them.
In this backpack, you’ve got room for everything you need. I carry the kid’s iPad and accessories, masks, essential oils, and my personals like wallet and keys.
Everything we need to cheer on our #15!

Learning to needlepoint with NeedlePaint

Learning to needlepoint with NeedlePaint 150 150 Jenn Pennell

Thanks to Needlepaint for sponsoring today’s post!

Hello Love!

2020 was the year we all stayed home. We all stayed home and watched TV, didn’t get out of our jammies and picked up new hobbies, right? Did you pick up a new hobby over the past year? While my family wishes I would have picked up more cooking skills, needlepointing is what stole my heart. It started popping up in my Instagram feed and with every fun design I saw, I knew I wanted to get my hands on a canvas and start punching.

Since I love Boston so much, I decided to start my needlepoint journey with this needlepoint belt from Needlepaint. I reached out to them with a few beginner questions and they were incredibly supportive and helped me get exactly what I needed. In my kit they sent me the printed canvas, threads, stitch guide and a printed color aide for guidance.

I’m so thankful they sent paperwork so I could see exactly how to do the stitches. While there’s many fun ones to try, this belt just requires a simple continental or tent stitch. Perfect for newbies like me.
Once I get the hang of it, I’ll be back to show you more!

5 things that make me happy

5 things that make me happy 150 150 Jenn Pennell
Hello Love!
Um, 2020 is so weird. Like, really weird.
Who would have thought we’d ever be in quarantine in the year 2020. Definitely not me.
Being a full-time work-at-home mom and having 3 children at home 24/7 has by far been the most challenging thing I’ve had to go through and most days I pretty much pass out as soon as the sun goes down.
That being said, I’ve had to find ways to keep my sanity since I’m home all day and can’t venture out anywhere…AND SHOP.
Man, I miss shopping.
Anyways, here’s a few things that have been such a blessing lately.
1. Outlander
G U Y S.
If you follow me on Facebook or Instagram YOU KNOW that I love me some Outlander.
And I love it 👏🏻all👏🏻the👏🏻ways.
I started off watching it on TV but now I’m digging deep into the books and it’s just the thing I need to transport my mind away from my computer and all those freaking dishes in the sink.
I recently bought books 1-5 in paperback AND on my Kindle AND audiobook.
Why did I buy them in all the versions?
Because I’m a Sassenach freak, that’s why.
I got the actual books from Target and they were a great deal. I got the first 4 books in a set of 4 HERE and then each of the other 4 books separately (5, 6, 7, 8).
If you’re a reader, get the books. If you’re more of a tv gal, WATCH THE SHOWS.
I’m not going to promise you won’t fall in love with James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser.

2. My Brooke Ring inspired painting

A few weeks ago my girls and I signed up for Brooke Ring’s virtually painting class and we had a blast! Even though I chose colors that didn’t really go with my house, it makes me incredibly happy every time I look at it.
If you’re interested in taking on of her classes, she hosts a new one every month or you can purchase her previous lessons HERE.
3. Snail mail
Old fashion snail mail is one of my absolute favorite things and the past few weeks I’ve been sending lots of goodies to my team members. Surprise gifts and fun postcards to lighten their day.
After my cousin Angela showed her new vertical garden HERE from GreenStalk Garden, I knew I had to have one. It hasn’t even come in yet but I’m completely giddy just thinking about it. I really got it for my 9 year old because she’s ALL about gardening right now and she’s going to love having this.
If you’re interested in starting your own use code SHAWAVENUE and you can get $10 off any tower! Grab it HEREhttp://lddy.no/gktg
Psssssst…this would make a fabulous Mother’s Day present!
Never in my life would I EVER have thought that a piece or workout machinery would make me happy but here we are.
2020, you are weird.
I ordered this baby for my wedding anniversary present and I love it more and more each day.
PRAISE DA LORT that I got this during quarantine because there ain’t NO WAY I’d be fitting into my summer clothes if I didn’t have it.
For $150, it’s been the best thing I’ve purchased in a long time.
What are some things that are making you happy right now? Let’s chat below!

Hello Love!
Going to antique stores is one of my favorite ways to spend a weekend. My girls and I will grab my mom go around Chattanooga one or twice a month and hit all of our favorite spots. Be sure to FOLLOW ME ON INSTAGRAM so you can follow along on all our adventures!
Today I thought I’d share with you 5 of my favorite home decor pieces I love to pick up while I’m scavenging.
1. Baskets
I love nothing more than a good quality basket. My mom collected Longaberger baskets years ago and filled our house with them. Once I got married and moved out, I did the same, using them to both decorate and to store things away from sight.
Longaberger sadly went out of business a few years ago but I love to pick them up at great prices at antique stores and thrift shops.
If used baskets aren’t your thing, have no fear! A former Longaberger employee started a new basket company in Dresden, Ohio and was able to hire many of the Longaberger employees back. So great, right?! I recently became a Dresden & Co. Proprietor and love that I get to spread the word about this amazing company, located right in the heart of Ohio.
I love me a good MADE IN THE USA product!
If you’re interested in shopping for a new basket, shop my website HERE!

2. Mason jars
When we built our current house, we went with countertops that had a hint of blue in them. After finding a few aqua mason jars at a shop, I knew I wanted to display them in the kitchen. Along with my teal pyrex collection, they add the perfect pop of color. These can be on the pricy side but I only buy them when I find them under $5.

3. Crocks
These are a great way to display things from artificial & dried flowers to using them to hold kitchen utensils.
These can be a little pricy so hold out until you find a good deal. I’ve never paid more than $20-30 for one.
4. Wood pieces such as frames, ladders, and windows
I’m a sucker for any old, chippy wood items. From tobacco baskets to old windows, I love have earthly elements all around the house.
Here are some of my favorite pieces.
When I find architectural pieces in antique stores, I try to think out of the box on how to display and use them in my house. I found these old printer stamp drawers and decided to hang them in my laundry room to display all my essential oils.
I also found an old box with shelves that I use to keep my old magazines.
5. Old quilts
Now, this collector piece can be a little on the pricy side, as some quilts can be hundreds of dollars but every now and then you can find a VERY well-loved one for a great price. I don’t mind pieces that have a little damage to them as I like to display my favorites in my old ladder, as seen below.
At the time that I’m writing this, we’re currently on stay-at-home orders due to the Covid-19 (Corona virus) outbreak. Since we haven’t been able to leave our homes for non-essential trips in almost 6 weeks, I’ve been shopping in my attic for old decor pieces that haven’t been out in a while. I found another crock with artificial flowers, a wood display piece, and many other things that I can use to give my spaces a fresh look.
As always, feel free to leave questions or comments below! I’d love to chat with you!

My journey into photography + our fall family photos

My journey into photography + our fall family photos 150 150 Jenn Pennell

Hello Love!

Almost 5 years ago I decided that a point & shoot camera just wasn’t working for taking the photos I wanted to take of my babies. I would see these photos on Facebook and Pinterest with that dreamy, blurry background and I would long for beautiful photos like that. I owned the gift shop at the time and couldn’t afford to have professional photos taken all the time of them so I took the plunge.  I went on eBay and bought an older model Canon DSL camera and the cheapest 50mm 1.8/f lens I could find and self-taught myself how to take photos.  I watched countless hours of YouTube videos and practiced everyday on my babes.  It soon became a passion of mine and I opened my photography business 1 1/2 years later.  Working full-time, having three kids, and then doing sessions put a lot of stress on my family so I had to cut back on that business, never losing my love for it.
Who would have thought knowing this trade would lead me to having my own fashion blog, because without it, I would have never been able to keep it up.  With a little help from my family and a great amount of support from my husband, it has turned into something great that has benefitted us all; it has lead me also to my new career as a VA for 3 different bloggers.  Knowing the system has given me this amazing new job where I help these other bloggers with their daily activities and allows me to work from home, where I am always available to do everything with my children, from attending field trips to being the first to hear about their school day when I pick them up.
I am so, so thankful that I got on eBay that day, because if not, I wouldn’t be here today!

The camera set in the photos belong to my daughter, RJ, who snaps all my photos for Shaw Avenue!  I currently use a Canon 6D + Canon 50mm f/1.4 & 85mm f/1.8 lenses for all my blog photos.
