Styling A Farmhouse Hutch with Antiques

Styling a Traditional China Cabinet

Wanting to know how to style a farmhouse hutch using antiques? Let me show you my favorite way to decorate mine! My kitchen hutch is one of my favorite pieces to decorate in my house. It gets changed quite often for the different seasons but this is my everyday look.

Styling a Traditional China Cabinet

Sometimes the hutch is filled with lots of color but this simple white and woods theme is my all-time favorite. You can see how I style it for Christmas using my Coton Colors Christmas dishes HERE.

On top is where I display all my interchangeable Coton Color dishes and fun attachments. Are you a Coton Colors lover? Check out all my blog posts about them HERE!

Filled with my Mikasa French Countryside dishes and warm Longaberger baskets, this look feel like home to me.

The Mikasa French Countryside dishes were my wedding dishes and have since been pretty much retired a lot of their pieces from the site. I found this out recently and have seen on a scavenger hunt to find all the pieces I was missing and to even out my sets. Does that consider them antiques? I sure hope not! HAHA!

Interested in purchasing the French Countryside pieces? I’ve found some amazing deals on eBay!

I have some other fun odd and vintage pieces in the cabinet at well. I have a small basket filled with beautiful (empty) chicken eggs and a vintage masher and sifter that belonged to my great-grandparents. I’m a big lover of family heirlooms.

The maple-colored Longaberger baskets add a welcoming warmth to the mostly white cabinet and it all just matches our home so perfectly.

What do you think? Do you like this subtle but cozy cabinet filled with some of my favorite things?

Thanks Phi Villa for sponsoring this DIY project!

We had so much fun creating this bedroom electric fireplace and mantel for our bedroom with our dear friends at Phi Villa. Be sure to check out our back porch update blog post, also featuring Phi Villa!

DIY Shiplap Mantel With Electric Fireplace

Hello Love! Wintertime is here and we’re getting our home prepared for the frigid temps that will be upon us soon. We have a fireplace in our living room that helps make it all warm & cozy this time of year. It’s so great to turn on the TV, grab a cozy blanket and snuggle up in front of the fire.

DIY Shiplap Mantel With Electric Fireplace

Our master bedroom is located in the back corner of our home, furthest away from our heat pump, which means, it’s often a lot colder than the rest of the house. For years we talked about adding another gas fireplace to our bedroom but knew it was going to cost us chunk of change and take up a lot of room in our bedroom.

DIY Shiplap Mantel With Electric Fireplace

Then, my friend dear friend Bonnie from Phi Villa reached out about working with us on another collaboration.

DIY Shiplap Mantel With Electric Fireplace

You may remember that we worked with Phi Villa a few months ago ON THIS PROJECT and we had a blast working with them on that collaboration. This time, they wanted us to help promote their new electric fireplaces.

We picked out the 50″ insert and started planning the mantel.

After a few trips to Home Depot to get lumber, shiplap, and paint, Jas got to work.

After about a day and a half of labor, it was complete! Doesn’t it look terrific?! Jas did such a great job building the surround and the electric fireplace is everything we wanted.

This electric fireplace insert comes with a ton of different features. The flames change colors and sizes, there’s LED backlighting, and it’s all remote-controlled. The fireplace can be inserted into a wall, mounted, or can be free-standing on a platform.

Hello love!
I wanted to take you all on a little diffuser tour of my house today. You all know I’m a lover of Young Living and I wanted to show off some of my favorite diffusers I use, both YL brand and others and how they’re decorated with.
The beautiful white lantern above is from Young Living and I love it because, like most YL diffusers, it has multiple output settings and color choices. My favorite is the candle flicker mode as it gives the ambiance of a real lantern. As a YL member I save 24% off every YL purchase by being a wholesale member. If you’re interested in purchasing a Young Living starter kit I would love to help you get started. Click this link to get started!

This beautiful wood & glass diffuser, the Aria, is my favorite in the house. She was splurge but worth every single penny. It matches so many different rooms in my house but I keep her in the kitchen because that’s the room I’m mostly in. It can be purchased alone or with a starter kit.
This beautiful white diffuser is called the Desert Mist and it’s also from Young Living. It features the same output and color modes as the lantern but comes in this pretty mosaic pattern. I can be purchased alone or along our $165 wholesale kit.
I recently purchased this adorable macrame cover that fits nicely over the diffuser to give it a little bohemian look. You can get it HERE.
The first diffuser I ever received was the Dewdrop, this two-toned diffuser, that came with my very first starter kit. Mine has a green base but it’s since been changed to a gray base as to match more homes. It can also be purchased alone or with a kit.
Last, but not least is my favorite non-Young Living diffuser. I snagged this adorable gold one a few months ago and it looks so cute in my daughter’s pink and gold room.
At a price point of only $22, it’s a steal and perfect for anyone needing a 2nd diffuser after getting a starter kit.
Numerous places carry diffusers now but know, not all are created the same.
I picked up this little white one from TJ Maxx last year and it definitely was not worth the $20 I spent on it. It does work but I have to hit the ON button around 20 times for it to finally stick to put out the mist. It’s quite the pain in the rear end. My mama always told me, “You get what you pay for!”.

As always, feel free to ask questions or leave comments below!

2 young girls + their own bathroom = one HUGE MESS.

Luckily, I found these awesome baskets for organizing their linen closet. Each girlie has their own waste basket, cosmetic caddy, and plenty of extra toilet paper.

Now I won’t be embarrassed when those nosey quests come over and take a peek inside. 👀

If you’re wanting to get your closets all spiffy, you can find these baskets and more at your local TJ Maxx or Marshalls. The prices ranged from $5.99 to $19.00 a basket so it was quite inexpensive to work on this project.

One of my favorite parts of this closet is our new turkish towels from Coco Loom. I originally got them to use as our pool/beach towels for the summer but the girls love the feel of them so much they’ve been using them as their bath towels lately. If you’re in the market for high-quality towels, be sure to check them out here: https://cocoloom.co.

Best Plants For Beginners

Best Plants For Beginners 768 1024 Jenn Pennell

Hello Love!

Whenever I post one of my pretty plant babies on Instagram I always get asked about which plants are best for beginners. I’m definitely no expert but I will share which plants I’ve been able to keep alive for almost a year. I’m pretty proud that my thumb isn’t so black anymore. 😂

But first, let me chat a second about the planter above. This trio of plants was a set that I found at Lowe’s last spring and it’s one of my favorites. The three plants (snake, chinese evergreen, and philodendron) are all no-fuss plants and some of the easiest to keep alive. They don’t need a lot of water or direct sunlight so they’re easy to place in your home.

Alright, are you ready?

Here’s the plants I personally have that I’ve had the easiest time keeping alive:

  • Arrowhead Plant – only needs watered about once a week and loves sunshine
  • Inch Plant / Wandering Jew – my first plant I got and still love. Colors are gorgeous and super easy to propagate. My one plant has now turned to 3.
  • Snake plant – basically indestructible. Only needs watered every 2-3 weeks. I have 6 of them.
  • ZZ plant – so gorgeous and another one that is SUPER low maintenance. Doesn’t need water often and can live in low light. Basically a plant of steel.
  • Monstera – my personal favorite. Easy to propagate and just needs watered once a week. Loves the sun light and doesn’t like to be moved often.
  • Pothos – another hardy plant that likes to “crawl”. These are do pretty in hanging planters so they can drape and be all beautiful.
Here’s a few tips to take into account before you purchase a plant.
  • First, decide where the plant will live in your home. Know what kind of light it’s going to get all day. You don’t want to purchase one that needs full light if it’s going to sit on your mantle or coffee table where it won’t get enough.
  • Keep your phone handy so you can do research on the plant when you’re in the store. Even though you may love the look of a plant, you don’t want to waste money and possibly kill it by not knowing what it needs beforehand.
  • Don’t repot your plant when you get it. Most plants can survive up to a year in the pot they come in before they need to move to a larger one. If you’re wanting to put it in a decorative pot, buy one a little bigger so the plastic fit down in it nicely.
  • If you’re wanting to expand your plant knowledge, I suggest joining The House Plant Enthusiasts Facebook page. The members are everything from beginners to experts and they are incredibly helping if you need any help or additional information. I get so inspired every time I see the posts.
  • Grab THIS MISTER. I use it on my plants every few days to add a bit of extra moisture to the leaves. It’s wonderful!!
Well, that’s all I have for now! As always, please feel free to reach out in the comments below or via email (hello@shawave.com) if you have any questions or need help with anything. I’m always here to help.

How I Created A Perfectly Organized Master Bedroom Closet

How I Created A Perfectly Organized Master Bedroom Closet
Shaw Avenue | Master Bedroom Closet Makeover & Closet Capsule Wardrobe
Hello Love!
A few years ago, my husband created my DREAM closet for my Christmas present (you can read that post here) and while it’s gone through many changes since then, it’s still my favorite room in the house.
Shaw Avenue | Master Bedroom Closet Makeover & Closet Capsule Wardrobe
My cousin and I recently decided to do a major purge and start sizing down for a more simplistic wardrobe. Less trendy, more classic. While she’s going for more of a French fashion vibe, I’m heading back to my favorite preppy, classic JCrew style and pulling most of my inspiration from my favorite blogger, Sarah Vickers Patrick aka Classy Girls Wear Pearls.
Shaw Avenue | Master Bedroom Closet Makeover & Closet Capsule Wardrobe
I’ve never been one to wear super trendy pieces but I am being more conscious about what I bring into this space. Instead of buying cheap shirts from Target that, let’s be honest, don’t last a second season, I’m investing in better pieces that will still look great three+ years down the line.
Shaw Avenue | Master Bedroom Closet Makeover & Closet Capsule Wardrobe
It took me an entire weekend to purge and organize this space and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. It brings me so much joy to walk into this room every day.
Shaw Avenue | Master Bedroom Closet Makeover & Closet Capsule Wardrobe

Let me walk you through a few things about how I created this space:

  • First up, I had to un-attach myself to certain things in order to get rid of them. Thinking about how much I paid for something really held me back but I had to overcome that and realize if I wasn’t using it, then I wasn’t enjoying it.
Shaw Avenue | Master Bedroom Closet Makeover & Closet Capsule Wardrobe
  • I brought every piece of clothing I had into this space. This closet was FULL before but now EVERYTHING is in here. I no longer have tubs of off-season apparel in my attic AND I brought everything from my chest of drawers in my bedroom in there. Now when it’s time to get dressed, everything I need is in here and I’m not going back and forth. I got rid of a lot of shoes and switched them over to the shelving on the opposite side. This left enough space to add baskets to organize my undergarments, socks, and pajamas. As I said, my entire wardrobe is now in this room. 🙌🏻
Shaw Avenue | Master Bedroom Closet Makeover & Closet Capsule Wardrobe
  • Organization is key to keeping this room flowing. Everything has a home and I have to be sure to put it back where it belongs when I’m done with it. I grabbed my gorgeous white Longaberger baskets to keep everything contained but beautiful to look at.
Shaw Avenue | Master Bedroom Closet Makeover & Closet Capsule Wardrobe
  • If you have room or wall space for a little home decor, add it! I’m currently redoing my home office so I moved my beloved framed shopping bags here and added a cute rug to brighten up the space even more.

I really couldn’t be happier with how the space turned out and I LOVE that everything I own is in this one room. I hope you enjoyed this post on how I created a perfectly organized master bedroom closet.

A Quick And Easy Master Bedroom Makeover

A Quick And Easy Master Bedroom Makeover 1536 2048 Jenn Pennell
A huge thank you to Cathay Home for sponsoring today’s post.
Hello Love!
I’ve been wanting the perfect farmhouse master bedroom FOREVER. You know the one…shiplapped walls, fluffy white comforter, iron headboard, the whole kit and caboodle.
When we talked about home improvements we were going to make in 2021, master bedroom furniture was at the bottom of the list. There’s  other projects that need to get done first so my bright white bedroom is just going to have to wait.
Then I found a new bedding company on Instagram and knew I needed this rusty orange comforter. A very boho-ish rusty comforter. TOTALLY not my norm, but girl, I needed it.
Now, how was I going to make that work with my almost 2-decade old cherry and iron bed and dressers? Well, after scouring Pinterest for a few hours, I got a few ideas on how I could mesh it all together and make it look fab. I bought my favorite linen curtains from Amazon, white Euro pillows from TJ Maxx, grabbed plants from other rooms. I also found new rattan lamps from Ross Dress for Less, and this GORGEOUS rug from Target to pull it all together.
Cathay Home also sent us these Smart Sheets and they are incredibly soft and have a fun feature. They’ve got sewn in pockets on each side to house some of your small essentials like your cell phone, reading glasses, remotes and more. I keep the end of my cell charger tucked in one so it doesn’t get lost between the bed and nightstand.
A few simple changes on a small budget.

How to propagate plants at home

Hello Love!

So, plants have pretty much taken over every room in my home. Since the beginning of the pandemic, I’ve been collecting plants to help bring life into our house and add earthy green tones to the decor. Even though some plants can be a little pricy, if I know I can propagate them to create more, I don’t mind spending a little bit extra. It’s been a bit of trial and error on my end but overall, I’m please with what plants I’ve been able to regrow.

If you’re wanting to get started propagating your own plant babies here’s some of my favorite sources:

If you’re wanting more than just a few internet articles and want to chat with other plant lovers, The House Plant Enthusiast Facebook page may just be the best place for you to start. From beginners to skilled plant gurus, you can ask questions and chat away with your new friends about anything “plant” under the sun. It’s my go-to place to search for plant info.
