Halloween decorating doesn’t have to stop at pumpkins on the porch or spooky lights in the yard. One of my favorite projects this year was creating a Halloween needlepoint tree that brings handmade charm to a traditionally spooky holiday. This project blends a mix of handmade needlepoint ornaments, themed ribbons, and festive garlands for a look that’s both fun and cohesive.
Creating the Base
I started with a 3-foot black lighted tree. The soft glow from the orange lights immediately gave the tree a moody Halloween feel and set the perfect foundation for layering. The tree is tall enough to stand out but still small enough to fit on a tabletop or in an entryway, like mine.

Choosing a Color Palette
To keep the look cohesive, I stitched all of my needlepoint ornaments using the same color threads. Even though the ornaments vary in shapes and themes, the consistent thread colors tie them all together beautifully. This trick makes the tree look intentional instead of busy, even when combining a wide variety of designs.
Needlepoint Ornaments
The ornaments are the true star of this Halloween needlepoint tree. I added a variety of shapes and designs including pumpkins, quilted hearts, and spooky scenes. Each ornament is playful and detailed, bringing a handmade touch that stands out against the black tree branches.

Garlands and Ribbons
To build more depth and texture, I added layers of ribbon and garland. Two different types of ribbon run through the branches, adding pops of color and sparkle. A black bat glitter garland wraps around the tree, adding a classic Halloween symbol that shimmers in the light.

For extra whimsy, I used a puffy ornament garland featuring stitched characters like ghosts, potion bottles, and pumpkins. The puffy style adds dimension and softens the look of the tree. To fill in any open spaces, I tucked in BOO felt pennants which gave a bold and cheerful finishing touch.
Displaying the Tree
This Halloween needlepoint tree works beautifully as a centerpiece for a party, a decoration for your entryway, or even as an accent in a family room. Because the colors are cohesive and the decorations are handmade, it feels personal and festive while still being stylish.
